Quicknic Table: A Simple Intervention
My recent work activities have been very drawing and administration-centric with seemingly endless hours spent in front of a screen - but I never forget to seek balance. I constantly remind myself to make... ...make anything. I carve out what little time I can to bring to life even the most modest of personal projects. Some projects are simple and some are probably even pretty dumb - but make I do.
Here's an example of how some reclaimed materials and weekend of sweat equity can add value to a home.
Our neighbor's dog kept jumping the short, busted, chain-link fence that neither one of us were sure who owned - so we went halfsies on new one. Once the Darling One saw the new fence coming up, she got excited with the potential of having a decent space to hang out in the yard. Our neighbor also happened to have a some demolished cedar fencing headed for the Bagster. So we took a simple desire and some reclaimed materials and banged-out a quick project.
Simple interventions are where it's at.

Sunday Morning Doodle
Taking some time to relax and just let the pen go where it wants to. In this exercise I tried not to think too much about architectural design per se - focusing more on scale and proportion and just exploring, no strings attached.
Funny, I find myself more and more trying to loosen up my professional work and embed more profession related stuff (in a mentally healthy way) into my leisure time.
And I guess I just had an appetite to doodle some quirky homes this morning.

Tiny Table Retrofit
I got to practice some joinery - still a bit sloppy, but much better than the last time and it will only get better.

One Handed Keyboard
Working in a field where "actions-per-minute" has a direct correlation with productivity, I imagine a more effective keyboard.
Figure 3. Proof of Concept
This one handed keyboard concept design addresses productivity in two ways:
1. Locating keys used most frequently at the most accessible locations - minimizing time spent between key strokes and finger fatigue.
2. Eliminating re-positioning. Not only does the one-handed utility of this design eliminate the migration of one hand between mouse and keyboard, the size and shape of the board conforms to the natural resting posture of the hand. Furthermore, to enable all keys to be accessible without adjusting the hand to a secondary position, keys located at familiar resting positions are much smaller. This allows more space for keys located in outstretched positions along the board to be much larger (size being dictated by proximity to resting positions).

I present the data-set in figure 2 as research that is not my own. This design represents the exploration of data justified form making in lieu of conforming the design of our most used products to precedence and habit. It's not perfect, but it's an idea.

Challenge Accepted: Triply Periodic Minimal Surface
I recently put out an open call for tutorial requests. One of my colleagues responded by challenging me to model this:
So here you go - a time lapse recording of my process figuring out how to model this Schwarz h Surface.
Total model time: just under 1 hour.
I'd like to reissue that original invitation. If you find yourself puzzled when modeling something or just want give me a challenge then leave a comment below and maybe I'll model it for the next video.
