Ephemeral Studio

2011 Spring Semester

Fourth Year

Architectural Design Studio

Critic: Michael Hoffman

For this architectural design topical studio the class spent a semester focused on media production. The final project was a proposal for a media production facility. The students were given free reign over both site and program.

The building is a marriage between an umbrella house and a capsule tower - creating a machine for interim artists to collaborate on media production projects in Central California. The umbrella houses the living units and is separated by a roof garden from the interchangeable modular volumes that make up the studio spaces below. An overhead crane suspended by the umbrella allows for easy manipulation of the prefabricated modular units. The facility is intended to be both an incubator for creative work and a lens for public viewing of media production.

The video demonstrates both the intent of the project from initial conception to the process of the idea as well as providing examples of a variety of techniques used in media production.
